Working on Father’s Child, the opera

...

Swiss-Dutch composer and violinist Helena Winkelman is known for her uniquely personal artistic voice.
Her multilayered, iridescent music is performed worldwide and captivates audiences as an intelligent and open fusion of contemporary sounds with folk music and Asian traditions.

The diversity of stylistic influences has brought about a very particular musical language in which subtle timbral nuances and finely wrought temporal structures unfold into works of radiant warmth, often imbued with an almost organic, nature-like quality.

As a charismatic violinist, Helena Winkelman establishes an exceptionally direct connection with her audience. Performing is as important to her as composing, and being continuously exposed to the masterworks of the past is a great source of inspiration for her compositions.

2016 she received the Georg Fischer Prize of the city of Schaffhausen and 2017 the Swiss Music Prize.

Since 1998 she lives in Basel, Switzerland, where she also teachers violin and composition.

Welcome to this new online gateway to my musical world.
All upcoming events are listed here, and over the coming weeks I will substantially expand the audio and video archive.
Interviews and various links offer insights into the background of my work.
For colleagues in search of compelling new repertoire: under Works you will find duration, instrumentation, and often even recordings of the pieces. This section, too, is not yet complete and is being continuously expanded.
For everyone working in management, biographies and photos are available for download under "Press".
In the future, this space will also host a small blog.
